More about "Simply Speaking" Toastmasters
At a typical club meeting, members are given a chance to practice
(1) chairing a meeting,
(2) impromptu speaking,
(3) prepared speeches,
and
(4) giving feedback on the speeches and other aspects of the meeting.
The atmosphere is always supportive, and usually lighthearted.
Almost all members start out being afraid to speak in public and within a short time are comfortable with public speaking.
The support of other members makes the difference.
Members often arrive early to network with other members in a light social environment.
Typical Club Meeting
A brief Business Meeting begins promptly at 6:30 and follows a printed agenda.
Administrative matters affecting the club are addressed and short reports by officers are presented. Parliamentary procedure and Robert's Rule of Order are used to conduct the business meeting.
A Toastmaster (each member has an opportunity to practice this role) then takes control of the meeting and welcomes the members and gives a general theme for the meeting.
Poet Master / Jester recites a poem and tells a joke or humorous story.
A Word Master gives a word of the day that all speakers try to work into their speeches and tells what he/she will be looking for in speeches to help guide speakers in making better speeches
A Grammarian / Ah Counter focuses on assisting other club members in choosing appropriate words and eliminating filler words.
The General Evaluator will give a few words about how speeches will be evaluated, introduce individual evaluators, the timer, and the topic master.
Table Topics - a session where 4 -7 impromptu one minute speeches are given.
Prepared Speeches, typically 5-7 minutes each, are given by several members of the club focusing on specific objectives as outlined in their manuals.
Evaluations provide positive feedback for all speakers.
Members improve their skills through peer evaluation on their strengths and suggestions on areas for improvement.
The Toastmaster then returns control of the meeting to the president.
Announcements are made, guests have the opportunity to give their comments and the meeting is adjourned.
