Evelyn Vidal
Volunteer English, Spanish, Statistics, and Psychology Tutor
My story began in Argentina, I was born December 12, 1975. My parents are Elizabeth and Manuel. My mom was born in Hungary and my father was born in Spain, but they met in Argentina, where my brothers and I were born. We lived there until 1990; when I was 14 years old and we moved to Miami to start a new life. Upon my arrival to the US, I was enrolled in Hialeah High School, where I attended the 10th grade in the fall of 1990. It was hard learning another language and getting accustomed to a new culture, but I managed to learn it little by little.
When I first started school, I dreaded the 1st day of High School. I thought I was
going to be the only student that didn't speak English well; little did I know that
wasn't the case. There were hundreds of students in the same predicament,
especially in Miami, which is considered a melting pot because of all the different
cultures. I did my Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year at Hialeah High and as
graduation was approaching, I got called from my Counselor to her office. I
remember she started by telling me that my GPA was somewhere around 3.85
and I remember telling her :"Oh, I didn't do well enough, I should have a 4.0" and
she replied: "are you kidding me, you did great and as a matter of fact, you did so
good that you will receive a High School Achievement Award and 2 free years in College tuition at Miami Dade Community College for being in the Top 10% of your Senior class." I can't begin to explain how proud I felt, and my parents, brothers, and boyfriend (now my husband) were ecstatic. The scholarship was extended for 2 more years at Florida Atlantic University for maintaining a high GPA (above 3.0). When I finished High School I started working at a Dental office, where I learned to perform dental prophylaxis, take x-rays, and be the receptionist, among other duties. Then, I realized I liked kids a lot, so I decided to work at a Pediatrician's office. I obtained my Medical Assistant degree by going to school at nights while attending college during the days, and I learned to give vaccines, draw blood, and other duties. I also worked for Healthcare insurance companies, where I authorized different medical procedures. After that position, I applied for the position of Performance Improvement Analyst at Hollywood Medical Center, which required a Bachelor's degree. This was the first time in my life that I used my Bachelor's degree to qualify for a position of that nature. In that position, I was in charge of assigning the work to the Case Managers, Social Workers, and writing minutes for the most important meetings that dictated procedures for hospital improvement. That position educated me enough to see what it takes to operate a hospital facility. From there, I was able to apply and be accepted for the great position I had until 2005 when my son was born. The position was as a Rehab Liaison at Naples Community Hospital. We got patients with diagnoses from Cancer, to debility due to depression, to elective surgeries (hips, knees); we got it all. I loved it when a patient told me that I helped them make the right decision to go to Rehab or when I got an authorization from an insurance company, or just if patients told me that I made a difference in their care. I really enjoy helping people.
My personal goal is to become a better person everyday. Also, it would help if I become less critical and demanding of myself, and took some time out of my schedule to enjoy the pleasures in life, spend more time with my family, and learn to relax more.
My career goals at Walden University are to continue to pursue a career as a Counseling Psychologist. By getting my Master's degree in Psychology in 2007 and now pursuing my second Master's in Mental Health Counseling, I come a step closer to getting my PhD, which is my final educational goal. Once I obtain my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, I plan to "help everyone in need" regardless of race, or education level completed.
My primary interest is to help rape victims, young mothers, and children in despairing families. In addition, I love to teach and help children excel just like I did as a young girl coming from another country. I would like to offer everyone emotional, mental, and counseling help. I want to show them that there's a better way to live and be happy. Though I know I cannot change the world, I know I can help build a better future for the next generation.
